Demonstrations in London against Israeli raid on Gaza aid flotilla

Protestors have marched across Central London in response to Israel's raid on a deadly aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip in the past week. The demonstration was noisy but peaceful, with people calling for the Israeli embassy in London to close. And there was a strong showing too, but it was matched by the city's police force. Al Jazeera's Tim Friend was there (5 June, 2010).

Storming of Gaza aid convoy

Israeli commandos armed with guns attacked the lead ship of a flotilla of aid-carrying vessels bound for Gaza on Monday, leaving several of the pro-Palestinian activists on board dead and many more injured. The Freedom Flotilla, a convoy of six ships carrying hundreds of activists, political leaders and journalists from around the world, was trying to deliver about 10000 tonnes of basic aid including food, medicines, and construction material, in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza. While Israel has said activists were the first to attack the troops with bats and knives when they boarded the ship, the flotilla's organisers said that Israeli forces were the ones to open fire first. Al Jazeera's Ayman Moyheldin reports from Jerusalem. [May 31, 2010]

On board Gaza's Freedom Flotilla
A flotilla of aid ships left a port in Cyprus on Sunday afternoon bound for the Gaza Strip. A total of six ships were expected to set sail carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists destined for Gaza in defiance of an Israeli embargo on the Palestinian territory. The flotilla from Turkey, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Greece, Kuwait and Algeria is carrying roughly 10000 tonnes of aid, including cement, water-purification systems and wheelchairs. Al Jazeera's Jamal El-shayyal is on board the Mavi Marmara, the lead ship in the Freedom Flotilla. In this video blog, he looks at what is on board and how the 600 passengers are coping with what is already proving to be a difficult mission. (30 May 2010)

We show blindfolded children being used as human shields alongside innocent civilians and medics being targeted. Mounir's eyes search around the old house as he recounts the events of 16th January, when a rocket fired from an unmanned aerial vehicle killed his sister, her husband and four of her children. The scene he says will never leave him. 'We found Mohammed lying there, cut in half. Ahmed was in three pieces; Wahid was totally burnt his eyes were gone. Wahid's father was dead. Nour had been decapitated. We couldn't see her head anywhere.' The attack on this home in Gaza City is just one of more than a dozen incidents recorded by Amnesty International where Israel's unmanned aerial vehicles killed civilians.
